Hanging and arrangement

Hanging a gallery wall around one anchor

The commonest disappointment with framed art is buying four small pieces to fill a large wall and finding the wall now looks busier and still empty. Small frames scattered across a big surface do not add up to a large piece; they read as four separate small events.

The fix is compositional rather than a matter of buying more. Everything below is about arrangement.

Choose the anchor first

Start with the largest piece you have room for and place it slightly off-centre on the wall. Everything else arranges around it. A twenty-by-forty canvas will settle a wall that six seven-inch frames only agitate.

If the budget allows one substantial piece or six small ones, the single piece is almost always the better outcome. Small frames are satellites; they are not designed to carry a wall alone.

Keep the gaps tight and equal

Two to three inches between frames is the range that makes a group read as one object. Wider spacing and the eye separates them again, which is precisely the effect you are trying to avoid.

Equal is as important as tight. Inconsistent gaps read as a mistake even when nobody can say what is wrong, and it is the most common flaw in a home-arranged wall.

Lay it out on the floor

Arrange the whole group on the floor first, photograph it, and only then start measuring the wall. Rearranging on the floor costs nothing; rearranging on the wall costs holes.

Cutting paper templates to each frame size and taping them up is the next step and it is worth the fifteen minutes. It answers the height question and the spacing question at the same time.

Fifty-seven inches, and the furniture exception

On an open wall, hang so the centre of the arrangement sits around fifty-seven inches from the floor – standing eye level, and the reason gallery hangs feel comfortable.

Above furniture the gap governs instead: six to eight inches between the top of the sofa or console and the bottom edge of the lowest frame. Any further and the art detaches from the furniture and floats.

Give the group a shape

The strongest arrangements have a straight line somewhere – a common top edge, a common bottom edge, or a shared centre line running through. That line is what the eye uses to read the group as deliberate.

A completely irregular scatter can work but it requires many more pieces than most people have. With four to six frames, pick a line.

Weight and fixings

A framed piece with glass is considerably heavier than it looks and a picture hook rated for two pounds will not hold it. Check the weight, and use a wall anchor suited to the wall type rather than to the frame.

In plasterboard that means a toggle or self-drilling anchor. Into masonry, a plug. It is worth knowing what the wall is before the parcel arrives rather than at the moment you want to hang it.

From our shelves

The framed sets and canvases this is written about, with finished sizes in each title. Everything below is in stock as this piece is published, and the prices shown are read live from the catalogue rather than typed into the article, so they cannot drift out of date. Across the whole group prices currently run from $22.99 to $44.99, and the listing pages carry the full specification for each one.
